Trans People in Sports
Amidst nationwide attacks on trans rights, we launched a multifaceted campaign to strike down a Long Island county’s attempt to ban trans girls and women from playing on girls’ and women’s sports teams.
In February 2024, the NYCLU filed a lawsuit challenging a transphobic sports ban in Nassau Country on behalf of the Long Island Roller Rebels, a roller derby team. In the face of an increasingly hostile environment for LGBTQ+ people nationwide, we sought to highlight the importance of community and access to public spaces for all. Our campaign used multimedia storytelling, earned media, grassroots in-person and digital organizing to capture national attention and spur local action.
AWARDS
Gold Webby Anthem
Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Awareness category
Partnering with the Rebels, we raised awareness and activated New Yorkers to voice their opposition, using multimedia pieces across our digital channels, action alerts targeting state and county officials, and more. Our video highlights the Roller Rebel players and their battle for equality.
I wanted this campaign to reflect the spunky and resilient spirit of the Rebels. Our assets were derived from player trading cards and a selection of the players were featured in their own player cards on social media, which they also enthusiastically shared with on their personal social media platforms. This helped introduce the team to our audiences in a fun and playful way.
The objective was to highlight the importance of community and equip Long Island residents to fight transphobic policies in their own backyard. Campaign materials included email e-action, campaign web page, click-to-email online action, YouTube video, podcast episode, and social media toolkit.

We garnered local and national coverage in over 100 outlets such as New York Times, CBS, and Them, reached over 200k people through our social media efforts, helped organize a rally on the steps of the Nassau County Legislature and delivered more than 26k messages to local lawmakers.
