Trans People in Jails & Prisons

This digital campaign supported our lawsuit on behalf of Makyyla Holland, a Black transgender woman. While in custody at the Broome County Jail, Makyyla was violently attacked, removed from hormone therapy, and denied other necessary medical care.

I put together a creative team of seven who I felt were uniquely positioned to tell this story. Together we created various cuts for social media to use across all channels. We developed a digital call to action, asking legislators to support the Gender Identity Respect, Dignity, and Safety Act which protects the lives of TGNCNBI people in jails and prisons, which we disseminated via print and digital supporting assets.

As a result of our advocacy, we reached a settlement with Broome County. They agreed to one of the strongest policies in the country, which requires the jail to house people consistent with their gender identity. It also requires the jail to ensure access to medical care free from discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation, including guaranteed access to medical care.
